TV program downloads
27 02 2005Up to 100,000 British viewers currently download new TV programmes from the Internet. Hit shows like Desperate Housewives and Six Feet Under are available within hours of the programmes being shown in the USA - mostly on the popular BitTorrent network.
Jan Francis of UK company TrackerWatch, which tracks torrents on the Internet said, “We are seeing a huge upsurge of users in the UK downloading first-run American shows. Most are downloading these programmes from the USA because it can take 6-12 months before they are finally screened in the UK.”
Many TV companies are worried by the report from Envisional, as such a prevalence of downloading could affect viewer numbers when the TV show is finally screened in the UK - causing a reduction in commercial advertisement revenue.
