The last days thousands of people stranded in airports allover Brazil. The reason is the all of a sudden the traffic controllers realized that their working conditions are so prehistoric that they cannot take the increasing air traffic control anymore.
Probably that’s true; despite enormous investments in new airports and renovation of existing airports airports in Brazil are one of the most shabby you’ll find in the world. The main reason for that is that the selection of suppliers is completely corrupt. Which is why I can truly understand the traffic controllers must work with equipment which most African countries could match.
I’m not writing about this however, the fact that much Brazilian infrastructure has cobwebs is no news. No, I’m writing this post because the action of the controllers and the coverage of the strike in all Brazilian newspapers and especiall Globo is corrupt.
Remember the crash of the American Legacy jet with the GOL Boeing? For weeks all Brazilian media crucified these two pilots. They took their passports and for weeks they have been held in Brazil. They both have a wife and kids in the US. Eventually it became clear that the fault of the crash was not the Legacy pilots. I wrote a previous posting on this and the article in the Chicago Tribune today is also revealing.
No, what I find truly ugly:
- All journalists are defending the Brazilian traffic controllers. Admitted, they don’t earn a lot and they have operational problems, big problems. But the sad fact is that their strike is too late. Due to their late response 154 of their own people died in the GOL crash.
- No word on the results of the investigation which proof the air controllers and not the Legacy pilots are the onces who eventually caused the two planes to crash into each other. Only international press covers is. This is so small and such a blatant proof of the Brazilian subjective mind. While journalists like Bruno Rose are surfing for some Orkut users who are air traffic controller (the six communities he found have 2.061 members… uau Bruno; do you want me to start a community which states that Globo does no objective journalism?)
It would be so grand if a journalist would write a humble ’sorry’ peace in the newspapers appologising to the Legacy pilots for the horrifying weeks where they were literally captured by Brazil without any proof.
