TAM flight JJ 3054

Congonhas is a crazy airport.  It’s Sao Paulo’s smaller airport located in the middle of the city.  The international airport Guarulhos is far away from the city center (Sao Paulo being a monstreous big city), so when you go down to Sao Paulo for a day you fly from Rio Santos Dumont to Sao Paulo Congonhas.  It’s an stunning experience, when you fly into Congonhas airport, it is like you are literally flying past people’s living rooms in apartment blocks. Then you land on the runway. It is completely surrounded by the central part of Sao Paulo city. Congonhas already has a history of heavy accidents, but yesterday’s accident breaks all records.   An Airbus A320 from TAM was flyng into Congonhas from porto Alegre at 17h16 Brazilian time.  It was raining heavy and coudn’t break fast enough.  The pilot tried to turn around at full speed on the ground and went over Avenida Washington Luis, crashed a taxi and at high speed went into a petrol reserve tank of TAM.  All 176 passengers are dead and at least 15 people on the ground also;  totaling at least 191 people dead.  When looking at the videos I’m amazed to see no part of wreckage of the A320, it exploded literally into a zillion pieces.

I’ll repeat it again (and Joe Sharkey will probably do the same te coming days): Forra Waldir Pires.
