Aerosinusitis
5 08 2007I’ve had the usual earjams when decending in a plane before. And one time when I had fever when flying into Buenos Aires, I had it as bad as this time.
8 flights in 5 days and a minor allergy nosejam: the barometric changes caused an underpressure area in my forehead which made the descent into Frankfurt a truly painful one. Has anybody had this before?
How do you avoid it? Decongestants before takeof? Which ones? Rinomar I rather avoid: (Pseudo) phenylpropanolamin chloorhydrate is a amfetamine and it’s a bit stupid to have amfetamine flowing thropugh your whole body, whilst you just need it in your nose.
But maybe I’m the only one who had this kind of killing headache when descending from a 12h flight.

I’ve had these killer headaches during flight descents for about 15 years. It feels like someone is drilling an ice pick into the side of my temple, and the first time it happened, I had to be wheeled off the plane. They can be horrible, horrible, but I’ve also managed to figure out (w/help from my allergist) how to mostly control them. Here’s what I’ve learned: To alleviate the possibility of a headache, I start taking nasal sprays (2 sprays in each nostril of Afrin, wait 5 min and then Rhinocort, 2 sprays of each in both nostrils) 2x/day about 2 days before every flight. Just before takeoff, I do another blast of Afrin and then Rhinocort, and then, because I’m completely paranoid about getting one of these headaches, I also take Sudafed and extra strength Tylenol. If it’s a long flight, I re-dose. Then about an hour before landing, I do another Afrin/Rhinocort. Usually, this does the trick, but not always. If the plane is on a sharp descent, the likelihood of getting one is much greater. Sometimes, even with all the prep and meds, I still get a headache.
I tought I was the only one. The pain is beyond measures. Half an hour after touching down, 90% of it is gone. I never get used to it.
I’ll prepare myself for the next trips.
Rhinocort is available in Belgium. Afrin not. It contains Oxymetazoline; so I’ll have to scout for an equivalent. And you combine Sudafed on top of it? Sudafed contains Phenulephrine, a less common form of Ocymetazoline.
Tylenol is Paracetamol, plenty of that here.
