Dell makes an *extra* 220% profit on the fact that you are European
3 12 2007I was just about to order 2 LCD screens when I noticed that the prices were still exactly the same as a year ago. Then I went to the US site of Dell and I made some quick calculations.
1. A Dell Ultrasharp 3007WFP costs 1.189 US$ VAT in. At the current exchange rate this is 810,71 EU. One could assume Dell does the same as Apple and prices US=EU pricing (an iPod shuffle costs 79 EU and as well 79 US$). But no; the price of a Dell ultrasharp is 1.803 EU VAT in. This is 222% more expensive than the price Americans pay for the same screen at the current exchange rates. Their costs are exactly the same; yet Americans get more than 2 screens for the 1 screen you as a European will get.
2. A dell Ultrasherp 2707 WFP cosst 995 US$; this is an equivalent of 678 EU; yet the price is 1490 EU. Same story: 219% more expensive.
Conclusion: Dell is selling at loss in the US to make sure Americans keep buying and try to recover these losses by selling at a 2,19 multiple in Europe.
Hey Dell, you don’t actually hope I will fall into this? I’ll rather buy this BenQ, which is quoted to be better than the 2407 WFP; yet features a 779 EU price tag instead of the 991 EU Dell 2407 WFP.

why this one and not lets say an lg screen? http://www.pixmania.be/be/nl/568595/art/lg/24-tft-scherm-wide-l245wp.html
