With the upcoming 2014 Worldcup and 2016 Olympics, the Brazilian police will start using small cameras fitted to glasses that can capture 400 facial images per second and end them to a central computer database storing up to 13 million faces.
The system can compare biometric data at 46,000 points on a face and will immediately signal any matches to known criminals or people wanted by police.
If there is a match a red signal will appear on a small screen connected to the glasses, alerting the police officer of the need to take further action or make an arrest.

I’m not a pessimist by nature, but I sincerely believe the earth is bound for a major disaster in the coming 2 decades. It is running beyond control.
The 2 major events that convinced me have been a discussion with one of the strategic planners of Shell, who convinced me that “there is no silver bullet” and secondly… flying over the Amazon.

And meanwhile the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant would be melting down and Crude oil petrol output is in a rut.

At the same time Petrobras is adding every month new oil rigs (while flying from Florianopolis to Rio on a blue-sky day last Friday, I was impressed by the number of tanker ships and rigs I could see). Surely good for Brazil and the Brazilians, to be seen if such will also be good for PBR shareholders.

Fact is: challenging times ahead for the Pale Blue Dot.

And no, I don’t believe change will come from governments pumping up support of alternative energy sources. The only solution is a massive downscale of our consumption patterns and stopping the ever increasing number of people on this planet. We all know deep down that the only thing each single one of us will be… greasing the rails towards the crash of our Pale Blue dot; it’s in our genes.

Exaggeration? Seriously, look at this excellent Spanish documentary of last month going in to detail how product design is focused on decreasing the life span of products. I’m still waiting for the day where I can buy the car that will be promoted as “lasts 15 years”.

Rio de Janeiro was featured in the Spanish Conde Nast Traveler of this month.

End November the Banco Central announced that foreign tourists spend 5,217 billion US$ between January and November 2010, that is 10,05% more than the same period in 2009. The month of November itself totaled 560 million US$, 19,52% more than the month of November in 2009.

In between 2003, when I entered Brazil for the first time and today, the total amount of foreign tourist expenditures in Brazil went up by 137%.

Ik schreef eerder al over deze problematiek die tanend is in België en onze welvaart uitholt.

In plaats van op te komen voor onze nationale belangen houden Belgische politiekers zich bezig met uit te halen naar andere landen die wel resoluut profiteurs de deur wijzen.

De zaak is simpel: hou van elke vreemdeling (Europees of niet-Europees) een overzicht bij wat zijn/haar financiële contributie aan België is en analyseer na 5 jaar.  Indien de rekening niet positief afsluit (de balans van bijdrage van de Belgische staat is nog steeds groter dan bijdrage aan de staat): buiten.

Whenever I’m in Brazil I try to answer the question “tell me about Belgium”; I’ve never really succeeded in giving an appropriate introduction to this surrealistic country I was born in.
