We take the BR101 frequently to drive from Florianopolis to Joinville. A few weeks ago the Polícia Rodoviária Federal stopped just before Itapema ….a pensionated fisherman in a wheelchair. The self-made motorized wheelchair was driving at 80 km/h on the highway.

The “driver”, Francisco Carlos Roma, will have to appear in court for driving on the public road without permission or drivers license.

Aangename normale temperaturen, ja. Warm en hitte, dat gebruik je wanneer het kwik langer dan een week boven de 40° gaat met een relatieve vochtigheidsgraad boven de 90% en het kwik ‘s avonds niet onder de 27° zakt.
Gelukkig dat de World Cup 2014 in de Braziliaanse winter valt, anders hadden onze duivelkes in Maracana wel geweten wat quente betekent.

Back in Belgium, weeks in Brazil and not a moment to set foot on a beach or enjoy a soulful Brazilian party (at Warung amongst others).
Amazing how fast these days music releases are flying around the Globo; Tim Berg’s (aka Avicii) had already made it to Brazil.

And this for a DJ in Stockholm who only started at 18 with no major record label behind him (Bromance is released on Beatport).

1. Brazilië zal niet in de finales komen. Naar Braziliaanse normen wordt het een worldcup in mineur. Winnen is uitgesloten, Brazilië zal in 2014 thuis winnen en 2 keer na elkaar is van het goede teveel voor de FIFA. Tot voor kort dacht ik zelfs dat de kans bestond dat ze niet in de semi finals zouden komen; in hun selectie moeten ze uitkomen tegen Portugal en Ivoorkust. Maar nu Drogba van Ivoorkust buitenspel is met een gebroken arm denk ik dat er opnieuw een kans is dat ze in de semi finals komen.
2. Spanje, Engeland en Nederland zullen het erg goed doen. Twee van die landen zullen zeker de semi finals behalen; ik gok dat Nederland erbij zal zijn.
3. Het wordt een Europees land dat de worldcup wint; ze hebben het nodig voor de moraal. Ik gok op Engeland of Spanje.

Afgelopen woensdag in België geland voor 10 dagen, een bevreemdende ervaring…
Pure chaos op de luchthavens, de kerk en staat op haar kop.

Maar vooral: niets is wat het lijkt, manipulatie en demagogie alom; en de Belgen blijven staan en kijken ernaar.

Nog donderdagavond op Phara: Marc Eyskens die tegen Alexander Decroo brult dat de spreads van de Belgische bonds in spreidstand gaan.  Alexander had geen stof tot reactie in de uitzending, en moest eerst  even Google raadplegen voordat hij een repliek kon geven; te laat.

Maar ondertussen steekt Strafor wel een waarschuwing op en ziet ook Jim Bianco geen uitweg voor Griekenland.

En dan is er nog de muntcrisis wereldwijd; ook Brazilië en Indië vervoegen de VS in de druk op China om de Chinese Yan te laten opwaarderen.

The news is just out, Lucy Walker‘s documentary “Waste Land” wins the Berliane Panoramic Audience Award.

I had seen her documentary “Blindsight” in 2006 and ever I read the announcement in 2008 that shewould be doing a documentary with Brazilian artist Vik Muniz I’ve been sitting on the tip of my chair.

The movie follows a group of ‘catadores’ (people who pick recycable materials in the garbage) on the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located North of Rio de Janeiro.   The collaboration of Vik with these people as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both dignity and despair as these catadores re-imagine their lives.

Time-lapse shots of these coalescing pictures — where unspooled film represents hair, plastic bottlecaps make outlines, sifted dust represents skin pigment — provoke a gee-whiz reaction from the audience, but more resonant is the emotional transformation of the people who have gone from climbing mountains of trash to participating in the creation of artworks they themselves inspired. (Muniz, whose art commands high sale prices, sells work in the series to benefit the Garbage Pickers Association.

The movie was filmed over three years and offers a stirring evidence of the transmormative power that comes from hope, art and the human spirit.
What Vik really wanted to do is to be able to change the life of people living on the dumpsite with through the materials they use every day.

What is most beautiful is that the film pays attention to a core issue of this project: is Vik Muniz doing his collaborators from the garbage dump a favor by exposing them to his world of art, or is he giving them false expectations about what they might do with their lives?
A question which is at the core for ever Brazilian living in poverty today as the country is growing rapidly into one of the world’s leading economical engines with a fast-growing middle class.
The answer tho the question seems different for each person in the movie.  But the project brings enough good to walk out from the room with an honest cause to be hopeful for the inhabitants of Jardim Gramacho.

And last but not least: the current secretary Ambiental of the Rio de Janeiro state, Mariline Ramos, announced in June 2009 that the dump will be closed and that a Biogas factory will be build on the dumpsite, yielding 160 cubic meter of biogas a year.

“Wie niet van carnaval houdt woont in het verkeerde land” kopletterde Globo gisteren.  Een waarheid als een koe; als je nagelbijtend door carnaval gaat in Brazilië zal je geduren de overige 360 dagen ook niet in het land overeind blijven.

De neef zit op een strandfuif in Florianopolis en Bart Lapers verkent alle Blocos van Rio, of toch bijna allemaal.  Bart werd ook geintroduceerd tot het spel van “Ficar”; veelbelovend.
En ook de dochtertjes van Madonna zijn op Carnaval in Rio en Paris Hilton wordt het uithangbord van een nieuw blond pilsje van m’n favoriete Rio biermerk Devassa.   Maar zoals de Financial Times gisteren uit de doeken deed: de parade in de sambadrome is een geoliede machine, zonder dat daarmee aan authenticiteit ingeboet wordt.

Madonna, Beyoncé en Alicia Keys verblijven dezer dagen allemaal in de Fasano in Ipanema.
Compleet toeval, Madonna heeft haar hart verloren aan Rio (Jesus toonde haar de weg), in die mate dat ze carnaval niet wil misssen en tot 20 februari in Rio verblijft.
Alicia Keys is in Rio voor de opnames van een nieuwe videoclip in een Favella van zona Sul.  En Beyoncé is in Rio voor haar concertreeks in Brazilië.  Ze scandeerde er “Brasil, não vejo a hora de voltar”; verwacht de dames met andere woorden binnenkort terug.  Beyoncé haar Braziliaanse matinale hairdo is… eeuh… different.
